Snowboarding in Austria

It's the best time of the year; to go on vacation. I enjoyed it so much. The bad thing is, it was over too soon. We only spent 1 week in Austria but this is enough time to get hurt and feel every single muscle in your body aching. Oh my goodness, I couldn't move for 2 whole days. I hardly got out of bed. Luckily it's all gone now and only the beautiful memories of this little trip will remain. But let me start from the beginning...

On Monday, after spending almost 7 hours on the autobahn, we made it safe to Lienz, a neat little city in the south of Austria. We just had to drive uphill to get to our cottage which wasn't actually so easy. There was a lot of snow and ice on the road and we also had some problems finding the way (A lot of thanks to the "helpful" navigation system. Let me just say: "Sie haben ihr Ziel erreicht") . But the awesome view compensated for all the inconveniences.

On Tuesday we spent the whole day snowboarding. It was so great. There was powder snow everywhere which made falling down a lot more bearable. At the end of the day it got so foggy that we could hardly see the ski run. We were so glad when we finally arrived the valley without any "human losses". So all the 10 of us went home and we had dinner together. On that evening I could already feel the beginning stiffness in my body.

The next 2 days we also went snowboarding of course. The weather was beautiful because the sun was shining all day long. And looking at all the mountains around us it made us think of the Lord Of The Rings movies. They could have easily shot it right there in Austria, believe me.

Friday and Saturday my body told me that it would be a good idea to stay at home. So my friend and I relaxed a little, enjoyed the sunshine and spent time reading (site-note: book recommendation: "The Definitive Book of Body Language". Auf deutsch: "Die kalte Schulter und der warme Händedruck". Very very interesting)
Anyway, we got ready for New Year's Eve and tried to keep ourselves up til midnight which wasn't easy because most of us were very exhausted. And we actually wanted to celebrate downtown but since my friend K hurt her knee we stayed in our cottage to celebrate there (Gute Besserung an dieser Stelle). And it was awesome. You could see the whole city with fireworks everywhere. It was just beautiful.

One day later we had to leave and said good bye to our "hostel wardens". And off we went.

Austria is definitely worth a visit especially when doing winter sport activities or if you just want to have the Lord Of The Rings feeling and no money to go to New Zealand.

  • Hello,
Well I was a little surprised when i read you went to Austris because I just spent a whole day of school studying Austria between 1910 and 1920, so now to hear about someone going there was interesting. Happy New Year, thought I just might say that. I am glad you had a safe and happy holliday. We have had an unusually warm winter here until yesterday. It has been getting in the 60's and 70's temperature wise and then it dropped to 24 this morning, so we bundled up. still have not had a snow this winter yet though, still waiting. I hope your test go well. Beautiful pictures of the mountains that you took. Well I will read more later.
